Kelsey Barnes finished in the middle of the pack. Freshman Jadyn Slack crashed the party. And senior Kayla Short bested last year’s finish at State by two spots, as all three Wolverines held their own at the Division 1A State Track and Field Championships May 28 and 29 on the campus of Eastern Washington University.

Barnes, a junior, tossed the shot put 32 feet 4 inches to finish ninth among 16 athletes competing in the final round of the event. Amanda Youngers of Brewster took first place with a toss of 38 feet 9 inches.

In the javelin, Slack shook off any first-time jitters to finish 10th with a throw of 104 feet 4 inches. She was one of two freshman competing in the final round, joining Leticia Cervantes of Ilwaco, who took seventh. Rainier’s Kristin Schoenherr, a junior, took first place with a throw of 132 feet.

Short, in a second-straight appearance at State, threw the javelin 102 feet 11 inches to finish 11th, one spot behind Slack. She finished 13th in the event a year ago with a throw that was six inches farther. Short took seventh at State in the long jump in 2009, but did not qualify for the event this year.
