Friday Harbor to face University Prep in Tri-District tourney

Avenge and advance: the Wolverines can avenge a 5-point loss early in the season and advance in post-season play with a win over the Pumas (16-4) in the opening round of the Tri-District 1A tournament; tip off is 5 p.m. at University Prep.

The Friday Harbor boys basketball team will square off against a familiar foe — University Prep — in the opening round of the Tri-District 1A tournament, which gets under way Wednesday, Feb. 19.

(Here’s a look at the bracket)

With a win, the Wolverines (14-10) can avenge a 5-point loss to the Pumas, Jan. 11 at University Prep, and advance in post-season play. The loss to University Prep was one of only two defeats for Friday Harbor in the final 10 games of the regular season.

The other was to Lynden Christian, who the Wolverines fell to Saturday, Feb. 15, in a 69-46 defeat in the consolation final of the District 1A playoffs.

Friday Harbor nearly matched the Lyncs bucket-for-bucket in the opening half Saturday, and trailed by only four at the break. C.J. Woods sliced the deficit to 1-point, 30-29, by knocking down a deep three-pointer at the start of the third period.

But it was all Lyncs after that.

The well went dry for the Wolverines, as Lynden Christian rattled off 18 consecutive points to grab a 48-29 advantage before Peter Strasser drained a three-point shot with about two minutes remaining in the period. Strasser scored 16 points to lead the Wolverines.

Stakes will be high in the rematch between the Wolverines and University Prep, a post-season elimination game. The winner will advance and play again Friday, while the season will come to an end for the loser.
