The Friday Harbor boys soccer team celebrates a goal by Javier Gomez

Not all one-point wins are equal.

The Friday Harbor boys soccer team tallied a one-point victory Nov. 22 over the Eagles of Grace Academy, a Northwest 1B/2B League rival and last year’s 2B state tournament runner-up.

But Saturday’s triumph at Sumner High School’s Sunset Chervron Stadium catapulted the Wolverines into third place at the 2014 state tournament¬†with a second straight 1-point win over the Eagles, this time in the consolation round of the championship bracket.

The boys squad emerged victorious in four-of-six post-season match ups in 2014

The Wolverines (11-5 league, 15-7 overall) tumbled into the 3rd place/4th place face-off following a 1-point loss of their own the day before to Waitsburg Prescott, which then fell victim to undefeated Mount Vernon Christian (23-0) by a single goal, 2-1, in the 2B tournament title game Saturday at Sumner.

The Friday Harbor girls soccer team, making a first-ever appearance at a state tournament, finished 4th in the championship round after giving up only two goals in two games but being held scoreless those back-to-back contests at Chevron Stadium.

The Wolverines (11-1 league, 14-7 overall) punched the program’s first-ever ticket to the state tournament with a 2-0 victory over Brewster Wednesday, Nov. 19, but fell 1-0 to Liberty Bell two days later, and then to Adna on Saturday by a score of 1-0 as well.

Crosspoint defeated Liberty Bell 5-1 Saturday to claim the girls 2B state tournament crown.
