Wolverines humbled by Nooksack Valley, 52-0 |Football
The Friday Harbor football team is ready to leave the past -- understandably -- behind.
The Wolverines, in what's proven to be a roller-ride of a season, headed way off course in a 52-0 loss on the road Friday at Nooksack Valley. The Pioneers, ranked No. 9 among Division 1A teams, tallied their first touchdown in the opening period after blocking a punt deep in Friday Harbor territory, and never looked back. They led 28-0 at the half, added 14 more after the break, and coasted down the stretch.
Injuries to all-league defensive end Parker Lawson and to speedy wide receiver Forrest Dayton, both of whom left the game in the third period, only compounded difficulties on the field. It was a lack of attention and perhaps of effort, Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said, that sealed the Wolverines fate. They committed six penalties in the first two quarters and another four after the break.
"It was not a good performance from the people who we need to perform for us to do well," Scheffer said. "All and all, it was not a good day."
Though dismantled on the field, the Wolverines looked decent on paper, at least in the passing game, by the end of the game. Quarterback Tanner Buck completed 12-of-21 pass attempts for 102 yards, and without an interception. Cody West caught four passes for 31 yards and Dayton hauled in four for 25 yards before being sidelined by an injury in the third period. Senior Mike Ausilio had three receptions for 25 yards.
But rushing game went nowhere. The Wolverines managed only 45 yards on 22 carries, while the Pioneers gained 193 yards on 29 carries.
Friday Harbor fell below the .500 mark, at 3-4, for the first time this year following its second loss of the season to the Pioneers. The Wolverines could even their record with a win at home Friday against Meridian in this year's Homecoming game.
