The Friday Harbor Wolverines girls soccer team defeated Meridian 2-0 Saturday at Meridian – the first defeat of the perennial powerhouse in four seasons.

The Wolverines improved to 6-2 overall.

Emma Ytander again led the team, scoring an unassisted goal in the third minute. Mandy Turnbull completed the scoring in the 38th minute, off an assist from Rhianna Franklin who was playing in an unaccustomed role as a striker.

The remainder of the match was scoreless although Friday Harbor had a number of opportunities in the second half.

Maggie Andersen played her best game ever at sweeper, Coach Mark Fishaut said. “And the defense as a whole made it another easy day for keeper Hannah Snow.”

The Wolverines have now registered six consecutive wins and a total of 501 consecutive minutes without yielding a goal.

The next match is away Oct. 1 at La Conner.
