Bob Buzzell and Steve Nightingale made the most out of back-to-back days on the course to claim first place this weekend in the San Juan Golf and Country Club Member/Guest Tournament.

The newly-minted champs edged out Jim Cox and Bill Jennings by two strokes to capture both the crown and club bragging rights.

Buzzell and Nightingale finished four strokes behind Cox and Jennings in the tournament’s final round on Sunday, but they carried a 6-stroke cushion over Cox and Jennings into the final round after shooting a collective 63 in the best-ball format the day before.

Buzzell and Nightingale leapfrogged over five other teams in open play Sunday — shooting a combined 138 — to seize the championship and the tourney’s grand prize: a $435 credit at the club’s pro shop.

Cox and Jennings together tallied 69 on Saturday, and led the field on Sunday with a combined 134. They earned a $360 pro shop credit for finishing second among 31 teams competing in the annual event.

John Sandwith and Lenny Thompson finished third with a two-day total of 204, one stroke behind Cox and Jennings. They pocketed a $270 pro shop credit for that finish.
