Michael Davis, Jordyn Taylor, Angela Gossom advance to Mat Classic

Three Friday Harbor wrestlers advanced from regional tournaments Saturday to the Mat Classic this weekend in the Tacoma Dome.

At the Class 1A Regional Tournament at Bellevue Christian High School, freshman Michael Davis (145) pinned Gary DeJager of Nooksack in 4:16 to win third place and a berth at state.

Senior Jordyn Taylor (171) defeated Meridian's Jed Hallmark, who was injured.

Junior Calen Mehrer (215) lost 8-3 to Cody Baskett of Orting to finish fourth and miss a spot at the state tournament. Freshman Willy Dunn (285) was pinned by Justin Boland of Port Townsend in 3:19 to finish fourth.

At the girls regional tournament at Liberty High School in Renton, senior Angela Gossom (130) advanced to the final round and was defeated by Chelsea Seidel of Sedro-Woolley 18-12, but earned a berth at the state tournament.

Gossom meets Kelsey Klein of Hoquiam at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mat Classic. The winner of that match faces either Hannah Stippich of Franklin Pierce or Alexandra Watts of Walla Walla at 5 p.m.

Davis meets Tyler Eccles of Castle Rock at noon. The winner of that match faces either Josh Mason of Cashmere or Kenny Sullivan of Warden at 5:52 p.m.

Taylor meets Ryan Campbell of Montesano at 12:48 p.m. The winner of that match faces either Robert Miller of Omak or Rafael Guzman of Zillah at 6:40 p.m.
