The fifth annual Frank Wilson Memorial Winter Blackmouth Derby began Feb. 1 and continues until April 15, the entire season for Area 7.

Frank Wilson was instrumental in forming San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services and this derby is held in memory of him. All proceeds from the derby will be donated to San Juan Island EMS.

Rules allow for retention of hatchery fish only; all wild salmon must be released.

There will be $75 gift certificates from King’s Marine for the largest fish registered at the end of each week. Grand prize receives $1,000; second place receives $500; and third place receives $250. “Mystery Fish” will receive $1,000.

Last year’s winners were Jeff Dougherty of Friday Harbor/Maple Valley, first place with a 21.02-pound fish; Pete Nelsen of Shaw Island, second place; Mike Sear of San Juan Island, third place; Johnny Jackson of San Juan Island, Mystery Fish.
