Bacon, Flint win annual Jack and Jill race
By FRED HOEPPNER
The Friday Harbor Sailing Club held its annual Jack and Jill race Saturday. In this race, the boat is raced with her regular skipper and a Jill of his choosing. We didn’t get all the crew names, but this is what we have: Arne Bentzen with Judy, Lloyd Bacon with Juliet Flint, Howard Lewis with sister Joan, Dennis Pratt with Karen Palmer, and Fred Hoeppner with Abbey Finney. Fleet Captain Paul Barger usually organizes the racers into a Cruising Division for boats without a handicap rating and a Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) division for those officially rated by the club handicapper, Fred Perez. Only PHRF-rated boats are eligible for club trophies. A strong ebb current and light winds made race strategy critical as the race instructions permitted the race marker, Jones Island, to be rounded in either direction from the start off the south end of Brown Island. Bentzen in Mistral showed how to do it by placing first in Cruising Division and first in elapsed time over the 12-mile course. Final results Cruising Division So keep your comments: We ask that all participants own their words by logging in with their Facebook account.
