Wolverines get all 'heavy metal' in season-opening win | Girls softball
The Wolverines broke out the heavy metal -- bats, that is -- to notch a victory in their season opener, scoring a dozen runs on 11 base hits en route to a 12-1 win on the road, March 15, at University Prep.
Leadoff hitter Emily Guard, who was 4-of-5 at the plate, scored three runs and Ashleigh Brown drove in three, including two on a towering extra-base hit that she turned into a triple.
With the score knotted at one run apiece in the third inning, the Wolverines shattered the tie and took control of the contest by scoring six runs. Friday Harbor gave up one unearned run in the first inning and held University Prep over the remainder of the game.
On the mound, senior Jean Melborne struck out five in four innings, giving way to sophomore Caitlyn Domenech in the fifth, who notched four strike outs in the final two innings of the game. Friday Harbor tallied three runs in the top of the top half of the sixth and held the Pumas scoreless to stake a 10-run lead and put an early end to the game.
The Wolverines are home Saturday, March 23, to host Nooksack Valley, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Friday Harbor Elementary School softball field.
