Wolverines rally falls short in 2-point defeat | Girls basketball

Stoked by a hot start to the second half, the Wolverines erased a three-point deficit and had the league's second-best team on the ropes midway through the third period, bolstered by a four-point lead.

Junior Tabatha Keane scored seven of the team's 11 points in the third period to help stake Friday Harbor to a 26-22 advantage with just over three minutes left in the quarter.

But Mount Vernon Christian (7-3, 1-0) refused to fold. The Hurricanes sharpshooters knocked down four consecutive 3-point shots to reclaim the lead and then traded baskets with the Wolverines in the fourth and final period to escaped with a 42-40 league victory, Jan. 3, in Friday Harbor.

Mount Vernon Christian sophomore Jacqueline Case tossed in 21 points to lead all scorers, while matching the number on her jersey with 21 points as well. Fellow sophomore Amanda Lervick also scored in double figures, adding 10 points to the Hurricanes total.

Keane tallied 15 points to lead the Wolverines and point-guard Emily Guard contributed eight.

With the loss, Friday Harbor fell to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in Northwest 1A/2B League play.

Next

The Wolverines traveled to Meridian Tuesday, Jan. 8, for a Division 1A regional matchup against the Trojans, and will be home Friday, Jan. 11, to host  The Vikings of Orcas; tip off is 7:15 p.m.
