The Wolverines lit up the scoreboard early and often in dispatching Division 2B Tacoma Baptist in a 65-53 non-conference victory, Friday, at La Conner.

Senior Collin Williamson tallied 20 points in leading Friday Harbor to its highest scoring output of the season. Junior Otis Cooper-West tossed in 18 points and senior swingman Donald Galt added 13.

The Wolverines, who put up 20 points in the opening period and 21 in the second, led 41-18 at the break, and bumped up the advantage by three more points by outscoring Tacoma Baptist 14-11 in the third.

But the Crusaders still had some fight left in them.

Sophomore Brandon Stoehr scored 16 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth period, as Tacoma Baptist narrowed its margin of defeat by outscoring the Wolverines 24-10 in the final quarter of play.

“We just had a bit of a let down there at the end,” Coach Rod Turnbull said. “We’re still a work in progress but we’re doing better on some of the little things, like ball movement. We did a better job Saturday on finishing the game.”

The Wolverines notched a second victory in less than 24 hours the following day, at La Conner as well, with a 58-32 start-to-finish win over Naselle, which, like Tacoma Baptist, and La Conner or Orcas, competes in the Division 2B realm.

Galt tossed in a team-high 20 points and Williamson and Cooper-West netted 12 points apiece.

With the pair of wins, the Wolverines improved to 4-3 overall and will have momentum on their side as they plunge head-long into the heart of their Division 1A conference schedule. Following Tuesday’s match up at home against Mount Baker, Friday Harbor faces Coupeville, Thursday, and Nooksack Valley, Saturday, in a pair of home contests that could weigh heavily on the regional 1A race for post-season play.

Next:

Tip off against Coupeville is 4:30 p.m., Thursday, in Turnbull Gym, and, at the time of the Journal’s Monday press deadline, had yet to be determined for Saturday’s contest against the Pioneers.
