Wolverines fall one point short at Meridian | Football

In a week filled with upsets, the Friday Harbor football team had one of their own seemingly in hand.

But Meridian, trailing 26-20 with just under three minutes, still had one more card to play. And the Trojans took full advantage of 35 yards in penalties against the Wolverines to mount a game-winning drive and clinch a 27-26 victory, Friday, on their home field.

A missed point-after-attempt and a failed two-point conversion, and penalties loom large in the loss, Friday Harbor’s first of the season.

“What we’re taking away from the game is we have the ability to play with anybody,” Coach Darrin Scheffer said. “We’ll be trying to learn from our mistakes and finish the game with poise.”

Junior Nate Steenkolk gained 170 yards on 16 carries for the Wolverines, who fell to 4-1 and a step behind the Trojans in the hunt for post-season seeding.

The Wolverines will host the Blaine Borderites (4-1), Friday; kick off is 7 p.m.
