The Wolverines stayed on the ground and let the defense do the rest to open the season with a 21-0 win on the road, Friday, against Anacortes.
It was Friday Harbor that took the early lead on the Seahawks home field, as senior Micah Powell plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out early in the second quarter. Powell, who accounted for 108 of the Wolverines 193 total rushing yards, tallied touchdown No. 2 just before the half to boost the advantage to 13-0 at the break.
"They moved the ball, I'll give them that," Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said of the Seahawks, a Division 2A team that only two years ago clinched a berth in the state tournament quarterfinals. "But our defense came up with the big plays when we really needed it."
No one played any bigger on the defensive side of the ball than junior Nate Steenkolk, who led the the team with 16 tackles. The Seahawks gained 109 on the ground and 116 through the air, for 225 yards of total offense, but came away empty in three drives into the red-zone.
Quarterback C.J. Woods and receiver Donald Galt hooked up on a 26-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for Friday Harbor's final score of the game. Woods had 40 passing yards for the game.
Friday Harbor hosts Lynden Christian (1-0), Friday; kick off is 6:45 p.m.
