Wolverines topple Mount Baker; 51-44 | Boys basketball

A second quarter scoring drought wasn’t enough to send the Wolverines off track.

But it kept things interesting.

The Friday Harbor boys basketball team overcame first-half foul trouble to tally its seventh straight win, a 51-44 victory on the road Dec. 27 over Division 2A Mount Baker.

“It was a good game for us,” Head Coach Rod Turnbull said. “The kids did a good job playing through that foul trouble in the first half.”

The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead, tossing in 16 points in the opening period of the non-conference contest and holding the Mountaineers (2-6) to just nine.

The tables turned in a hurry, however, as several Wolverine starters, saddled with fouls, rode out the remainder of the half on the bench and Mount Baker took advantage.

The Mountaineers lit up the second period with 16 points of their own and hit the locker room at the half with a 2-point lead in tow.

It didn’t last.

After the break, Mount Baker went dormant on the offensive end, netting only four points in the third period, and the Wolverines tossed in 12 to reclaim the lead, the momentum and a 35-29 advantage going into the final period of play.

They kept pace with the Mountaineers on the offensive end down the stretch, posting 16 points and giving up 15, to seal the victory.

With the win, the Wolverines wrapped up the year by tallying their seventh win in a row and improved to 7-1 overall on the season.

“We’re not a polished team by far,” Turnbull said. “But the guys play well together and they work hard at playing together. I think that’s their strength.”

Friday Harbor meets league rival Shoreline Christian on the road Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. They host Cedar Park Christian Jan. 6, at 6 p.m., and Meridian, Jan. 7; tip off is 1:30 p.m.
