Wolverines dominate ground game in 40-20 win over Lyncs | Football

Tall, lean, lanky... and elusive too.

Friday Harbor quarterback Donald Galt ran every which way but loose in leading the Wolverines to a rare, but decisive, 40-20 victory over Lynden Christian at home, Friday, under the lights. If yards were calculated from east to west, Galt might have tallied over 200.

As is, the junior QB shaked, baked and dashed his way to 148 total yards on the ground —north to south — and one rushing touchdown as well. Oh yeah... from his cornerback position on the defensive side of the ball, Galt also picked off a pass and returned it for a TD as well.

"It finally felt like we played together as a team," Galt said. "We deserved it."

The Wolverines (2-3) jumped out to an early 22-0 and never trailed.

Still, the contest was up for grabs at the half, as the Lyncs scored on back-to-back possessions just before break to narrow Friday Harbor's lead to 22-14. Lynden Christian drew even closer, at 22-20, by driving the length of the field on their first possession of the third quarter and tallying a TD.

That's as close as they would come.

With just over two minutes remaining in the third period, and Lynden Christian with the ball at midfield, Galt picked off a pass that slip through the grasp of a Lyncs receiver and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown. The Wolverines tallied two more TDs in the final period, while holding the Lyncs scoreless, to seal the win.

The Wolverines amassed 285 yards and four TDs on the ground. Sophomore Nate Steenkolk gained 67 yards on ten carries, tallied two of the Wolverines rushing TDs and junior Jacob Justiniano scored one as well.

The Lyncs managed just 71 rushing yards against an unyielding Friday Harbor defense.

"Our defense did a pretty good job," Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said. "I'm real proud of our offensive line. We did a great job in the trenches."

Friday's win marks the team's second victory over Lynden Christian in Scheffer's 4-year tenure at the helm. The Lyncs twice prevailed in overtime.

On the heels of Friday's victory, Scheffer said the players are anxious for the upcoming rematch on the road Friday against Meridian. The Trojans posted a 50-27 win three weeks ago in Friday Harbor. "We're excited," Scheffer said.

"We haven't beaten Meridian before. We're going to go out and give it our best shot."
