One could argue that size and strength are not his greatest assets.
But there’s no question that Friday Harbor senior Parker Satin has the never-say-die thing down to a tee.
Trailing 1-5 in the opening set, Satin steadily worked his way back into the contest to bag the opener by a score of 7-6, winning the tie-breaker at 7-4, then dropped the second set, 6-3, but outlasted Coupeville’s Nathan Lamb in the decisive third set, 6-4, to claim the No. 1 singles match up in the Wolverines’ victory at home, Saturday.
It’s Satin’s second-straight win over Lamb, the Wolves’ top singles player, in less than a week and the Wolverines avenged an earlier 3-2 loss at Coupeville with the resilient senior leading the way.
“I feel pretty good about it, but it definitely wasn’t easy,” Satin said of the three setter. “I started off bad but just tried to keep the ball deep and to play consistently. My legs got a little tired toward the end.”
Friday Harbor’s No. 2 singles player, senior Hayden Place, made quick work of his opponent, Ben Wherman, netting the win at 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Friday Harbor’s No. 1 tandem of senior Ryan Cole and sophomore Sean Hills, making his debut on the team this year, cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory.
“I’m feeling pretty good about this year,” Cole said. “Last year wasn’t so hot. It’s nice to be a senior. It’s like being at the top of the food chain.”
Hills, described as a “monster” at the net by Coach Dick Barnes, said he’s learning a lot about the game from Cole “He’s keepin’ me in the game and helpin’ me out quite a bit.”
The Wolves prevailed in the match up of No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, but Friday Harbor claimed the match by an overall score of 3-2.
The Wolverines host South Whidbey, a Division 2A team, Thursday; match time is 3:30 p.m. They face Calvelero Middle School on the road, Monday, Sept. 26, and are on the road for a rematch against South Whidbey, Thursday, Sept. 29.
