Wolverines clobber Coupeville, 50-17, to notch third win in a row | Girls Basketball

The Wolverines took little pity in dealing an injury-riddle and inexperienced Coupeville squad a decisive 50-17 defeat Saturday in Turnbull Gym.

It was, after all, payback time for the Wolverines, who suffered a pair of tough losses against the Wolves a year ago, including a season-ending defeat in the opening round of the playoffs.

With the win, Friday Harbor improved to 3-0 and for the first time in four years turn the tables on its Whidbey Island rival, hit hard by graduation and who, because of injuries, played without its starting backcourt tandem. The Wolves fell to 1-3.

"It still felt nice," Larissa Nash said of hanging a loss on the Wolves. "We finally got to do to them what they've been doing to us for all these years."

Senior Maggie Andersen tallied 13 points, nine of which came before the break, to lead the Wolverines on the offensive end. Nash, a junior, tossed in 10 points to match a career-high and junior Liz Taylor contributed 10 as well.

The Wolverines jumped out in front early, led 28-9 at the break, held Coupeville to just two points in the third period, and then coasted to victory in their first game of the season before the home crowd. Friday Harbor's starting five sat out the bulk of the final period as the backups outscored Coupeville 9-6 while sealing the win.

Next

Friday Harbor opened league play at Concrete Tuesday. They host Orcas Friday, tip off is 7:15 p.m., and then host Nooksack Valley on Saturday; tip off is at noon at Turnbull Gym.
