Strong winds and an experienced Coupeville squad prevailed Sept. 24 as the Wolverines boys tennis team fell 4-2 in the match between 1A rivals, on Whidbey Island.

The Wolverines grabbed an early lead when juniors Hayden Place and Zack Reitan tallied a victory by default in No. 1 doubles.

With the score tied at two games apiece in the opening set, Coupeville was forced to give up the match when Sam Weaver twisted an ankle and could no longer compete. The Wolves rebounded to even the match as Kevin Malone and Elwyn Pratt were dealt a 6-2 6-2 defeat in No. 2 doubles.

In singles, junior Parker Satin forced Coupeville’s top singles player, Ben Hayes, into a tie-breaker in the opening set before falling 7-6, and then 6-1 in second set.

Ryan Cole fell 6-4 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Senior Stephan Chadwick and Shaughn Anderson were defeated in straight sets in the No. 3 doubles showdown.

Sophomore Cody Coyne, teamed up with Chadwick in an exhibition match, helped to give the Wolverines a lift for the journey home with a 6-1 6-2 victory at the conclusion of the match.

Next: The Wolverines travel Sept. 29 to Cavelero Middle School.

They host South Whidbey, led by 2009 state 2A champ Riley Newman, Sept. 30, beginning at 4:15 p.m..
