Friday Harbor native Matt Cowell, now of Bellingham, shot 144 over two rounds to finish tied for second in the PNGA Amateur Public Links Championship at Lake Padden Golf Course, Aug. 28-29.

Jack Kelly of North Bend won with 137.

Cowell shot 2-over 74 in the first round, just two strokes behind Kelly, and improved to 2-under 70 in the final round. But Kelly finished with a second-round 65 to put distance between himself and the rest of the field.

Cowell, a three-time San Juan Open champ. has performed well at Lake Padden. He won the Amateur and the May Masters on the course in 2009; his Masters victory included an ace on the 12th hole.
