I do not live in the Town of Friday Harbor. I am not in need of lower-cost housing. But I feel I have a very real interest in the outcome of the proposed annexation to the town which will enable the San Juan Community Home Trust to provide permanently affordable homes on the Buck/Boreen property.

Our wonderful island could become a sterile and unappealing place if the only people who live here are well-to-do retirees who rely for all their services on outsiders commuting by ferry every day to take care of our needs. It would be like living in Leisure World.

Today, San Juan Island is still a vibrant community, with opportunities for people of all ages and income levels to contribute to and enjoy a healthy social, economic and natural environment. But we cannot ignore the reality that high housing costs are squeezing out families and younger people.

I urge the Town Council to approve annexation of the Buck/Boreen property to make it possible for the Community Home Trust to follow through with plans for permanently affordable homes. Creating these housing opportunities will benefit everyone who lives on San Juan Island.
