We would like to thank all those who participated and who made the 5th Annual Friday Harbor Fly-In and Community Open House, once again, an extraordinary success.

Great weather, an 8 a.m. kickoff breakfast by the Cutthroat Pirates, many hard-working volunteers, generous sponsors and pilots, and a fabulous turnout made this an event to remember.

Thousands of community members, pilots, and kids participated in enjoying this year’s Fly-in. The day began with the local American Legion Color Guard, and Jill’s Urbach’s beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, followed by a P-51 Mustang fly-over. It went “upwards” from there, with a plethora of takes-off and landings by specialized aircraft, antique war birds, custom-built flying machines, and helicopters.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the businesses of Friday Harbor - and beyond - for their financial sponsorship of this event:

International Sport Sciences Association, Larry’s Autobody, Vanderyacht Propane, Cask & Schooner Public House & Restaurant, Aeronautical Services, King’s Market & MarketPlace (water), Browne’s Home Center (water), Aeronautical Services, CenturyLink, San Juan Pilots Association, First American Title, Islanders Bank, FedEx, M & W Auto Sales, Westwind Aviation, Kenmore Air (scenic flight), Roche Harbor Resort, Printonyx (printing), Heritage Flight Museum, American Legion, Craig & Jill Dorsey, Dane Armstrong, The San Juan County Fair, Stu & Roni McPherson, Alice Shull (poster design), Heuristic Enterprises (ice), Mitzi Johnson (calligraphy), Brandli Law (contest prizes), Fred Jungclaus Graphics, Jim Crossley, Friday Harbor Ace Hardware.

A special thank you goes to Island Rec’s Lowel Jons, who facilitated our kids hangar and glider contest. The free flights provided by Dr. John Geyman & Darryl Swenson to Camp Eagle Rock children were very popular, as well as the give-away helicopter rides by Dane Armstrong and free CJ-6 rides by Brad Engbrecht.   Our sponsors are invaluable.

Thank you to our food vendors: Cutthroat Pirates (and their airship Bruenhilda), Kiwanis, Ernie’s Café, ‘Team Local’ Ice Cream, and Popcorn by Willows.

Also a special thank to our announcer, Rick Drury, who has not only been the “voice of the fly-in” since its inception, but a prime contributor in getting the many cool war birds that have graced our airport.

And let’s not forget Brian Hoyer, who has always provided sound equipment for us.

A special thanks to BJ Brandli for making all the thousands of details happen along with Stuart Hansen, Tim Kelley, and Brian McGlynn, of the airport staff, for all their hard work and dedication. Kudos goes to Fred Schumacher, our “press” guy; he gets the word out to everyone!

Sincere gratitude goes to the pilots who donated fly-bys and aerial demonstrations, for our Fly-In would not have been complete without them. As well, special thanks go to the pilots who flew in and participated in putting their airplanes on static display.

Having thousands of people, especially children, be able to walk around, admire, be amazed by, and touch the airplanes is one of the very special parts of our Fly-In. We were proud to have these as event highlights.

If we have missed naming anyone who helped with the 5th Annual Fly-In and Community Open House, we apologize in advance.

Thank you to the people of the San Juan Islands for your support - without you, it wouldn’t happen.

Dave Ryan, Friday Harbor Airport manager, Friday Harbor Fly-In and Community Open House
