United Way continues to provide invaluable support for the health and well-being of our county’s youth through many organizations, including ours — the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition.

Over the past year, hundreds of children have participated in Youth Leadership Initiative activities due to the support of United Way.

Creative, hands-on learning experiences for children in grades K-12 help youth discover their own strengths and leadership skills, and to acknowledge the strengths of others.

Programs have included FHES enrichment classes and after school education at STAR (Island Rec’s Study Time and After School Recreation program) using team-building “challenge” activities to develop group connection. Problem-solving, communication, cooperation and healthy decision-making are just a few essential life skills children gain.

The annual Youth Leadership Summits trains FHHS teen leaders to guide FHMS 8th graders through an exciting day of skill development. The San Juan County Conservation Corps teens built trust and cohesiveness through a two-day “challenge” adventure - supporting their summer work on community environmental projects.

Older teens are taking charge of the direction of their lives while supporting younger youth, and, the health of our environment. Yoga Calm classes offer children tools to manage stress and develop habits that improve their physical, emotional and mental well-being, and academic achievement. Additional organizations such as the SJI Library, XYZ Movement Arts and the SJI Community Foundation collaborate with us to bring these programs to island youth through United Way’s support.

Please join the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition in thanking United Way for its vision to create a healthy community through the conscious care of our children.
