Rosenfeld goes public with sleep disorder diagnosis | Letters

In keeping with my promise to make my sleep clinic test results public, I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

According to the Mayo Clinic, "Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly and you feel tired even after a full night's sleep."

Even though I don't seem to have trouble sleeping at night, tests show I haven’t been getting enough deep sleep. This can cause daytime drowsiness. I have also learned that sleep apnea has many other potential health impacts beyond sleep deprivation. Sleep apnea creates great stress on the body and can also lead to stroke, high blood pressure, and heart attacks.

For me, the next step is to get set-up with a cpap (continuous positive airway pressure) machine to assist with my night-time apnea events.

A number of people have contacted me about the positive difference this treatment has made in their lives, and I have been heartened by the support that has been extended to me by many in our community.

I encourage anyone who may suspect that they or a loved one may be struggling with sleep apnea to discuss this with their doctor.
