Knit scarves for our people in uniform
October 4, 2010 · 9:14 AM
There is still time to knit scarves for our military for the upcoming winter cold overseas. Mailing deadline is Dec. 1.
Here are directions for an easy attractive scarf. One takes about 1 1/2 skein of yarn. Use colors suitable for the military. Instructions and more information are also available at the yarn shop across the street from King’s Market. Show our troops how much we care!
We want to include a knit scarf in every Holiday Care Package (at least 60,000!) Please spread the word about this project. Encourage knitting groups, blogs and websites to support us! Please include a note if you like with your scarf to wish them well and tell them how much you appreciate all they do for us! Your only shipping cost is in sending the items to Operation Gratitude in California, however, any contributions toward the cost of shipping the packages overseas would be greatly appreciated.
They are so simple and easy to knit while watching TV, riding the ferry, or sitting in a waiting room. It would be an easy way to teach your grandchildren how to knit! Let’s do as many as you can!
Thank you for your help in this worthwhile project. I appreciate so many who have called to tell me how many they have knit already. Thank you so much for participating!
Here are instructions for the attractive “Mistake Rib” scarf:
— Use large needles, size 11 or 13.
— The “Mistake Rib” pattern is simple, lays flat, gives a little body to the scarf, has a great deal of stretchiness and creates an interesting texture and is reversible. The width of the scarf is about 6 inches.
— Cast on 37. For every row *k2, p2, repeat ending with last three stitches the same. Turn and repeat until 48 inches or 54 inches in length. Cast off. Then, start another!
Send to: Operation Gratitude, California Army National Guard, 17330 Victory Blvd., Van Nuys, CA 91406. Contact Charlie Othold, 818-437-6201.
Financial donations! Any amount you are able to send will be greatly appreciated, as each care package costs about $11 to ship. Please send checks to: Operation Gratitude, 16444 Refugio Road, Encino, CA 91436 (and it’s all tax-deductible)!
