Mary E. Bacon, age 83, passed away peacefully on Jan. 8, 2018, at Village at the Harbour in Friday Harbor, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 24, 1934, in Fullerton, California to Burl and Marge Schlagenhauff.

Mary will be remembered long after her passing for her love of the unconventional, and her wonderful sense of expression and creativity that was personified in her art. She was a passionate artist, often organizing art fairs and museum exhibits, in which her work was frequently included. She lives on in the beautiful relics of her life that she left behind.

She will also be remembered for the larger-than-life, caring spirit she possessed. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, even recently becoming a great-grandmother. Her family will remember her fondly for her wicked sense of humor, fiercely independent spirit and the zeal in which she attacked her life. She had a gift for making her family members feel loved in her own unique way. Time spent with Mary Bacon, whether an hour or a day, was sure to deeply touch those she came in contact with.

Mary made her mark on her beloved hometowns of Laguna Beach, California and Friday Harbor. Together with her husband Lloyd, they built a beautiful home for their family in each town that in themselves were works of art. Mary shared her love of the creative process with the children of Laguna Beach, teaching elementary students art for over a decade. After her retirement, Lloyd and Mary made the island their permanent home. She was as recognizable in Friday Harbor by her bright orange Volkswagen Beetle as she was by her upbeat, energetic demeanor.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband Lloyd; her daughter Jenifer, son Benjamin and his wife Beverly, and her son Alexander; grandchildren, Sebastian and his wife Casey, Caleb, Jacob and Isaac, and great-grandchild Pierce.
