Dion Boris Sutton

Dion Boris Charles Sutton passed away on Dec. 5, 2013, in Port Angeles, Wash. at the age of 85.

Dion was born on May 24, 1928 in San Francisco, Calif., and married Nancy Lee Haskin on July 18, 1953 in Santa Barbara, Calif., where they lived and raised a family.

Dion graduated from Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, Calif. and served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War, leaving service as a master sergeant.

He had a successful career as a land surveyor and planner, primarily in Santa Barbara, Calif. There, working with in the Penfield and Smith Engineering Firm, he was involved in the Fess Parker Hotel project, and the Palm Park Extension, which includes the carousel on Cabrillo Blvd.

He also worked on the La Cumbre Plaza, The Biltmore Annex, the Westwood Hills Subdivision in Santa Barbara, as well as various golf courses throughout California and other projects around the country.

At one time, he served as the president of Penfield and Smith Engineering Firm. After retirement in 1980, he and Nancy moved to the San Juan Islands in Washington State, living in Friday Harbor with a home on Limestone Point.

Dion was an enthusiastic and meticulous collector of art and music. He built up a tremendous stamp collection over the years, as well as a collection of vintage opera music, which he donated to the University of Victoria in 2009. He enjoyed singing and provided his deep baritone voice to his church choir for many years. He also liked vintage cars, and restored two Model A Fords to their former glory.

He will be truly missed by his loving family.

He is survived by his son, Andrew Sutton and daughter, Susan Sutton; three grandchildren, Justin Haight, Cody Haight and Shoshana McGowan, as well as a great-granddaughter, Malaika Haight. He also leaves behind his brother Richard Adams and niece Nicole Adams, as well as his sister-in-law Madge Kelley.

A memorial service and Catholic Mass will take place on San Juan Island on Jan. 25, 2014, beginning at 11 a.m. Please contact cjhaight@gmail.com for more information.
