Allen Penfield Stewart

1935 — 2011

Al was a long-time San Juan Island resident and more recently lived in La Conner with his wife, Sherry Landers Stewart.

He died June 4, 2011.

Al worked in the San Juan County Assessor’s Office before accepting a position as chief appraiser in Skagit County. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Skagit County Board of Equalization.

Al was born and raised in Berkeley and Lafayette, Calif., where he attended schools, including graduating from the University of California.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He moved to Seattle and entered the real estate business, joining the Henry Broderick Co. He formed his own company, Cornell-Stewart & Associates, specializing in property management.

Al’s first island home was at Sunset Point, where he constructed a “small” weekend home, built over three weekends. His next home was rebuilding the old “farmhouse” at the top of Bailer Hill Road. The last San Juan Island home he built was on Afterglow Drive.

Al was preceded in death by his two daughters, Kira and Anna.

His family maintains a long-time family retreat in Lafayette, Calif., where a gathering of friends and family will be held in late July, on his birthday.
