Winter weather wreaks havoc | Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls:

Feb. 1

• Deputies responded to a call of an unwanted person in Friday Harbor. The complainant said a young female knocked on her door at 6 a.m. and when she answered, the female tried to verbally instigate a physical fight. The subject left without further incident.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to an Eastsound business in regards to a lost or stolen license plate.

• An Orcas deputy cited a driver who was using his cell phone while driving.

• A Lopez Island deputy was asked to check on the well-being of a child. The youth was located safe and sound.

Feb. 2

• An Orcas deputy stopped a known driver, who does not have a valid driver’s license and possibly a warrant out for his arrest. The subject was arrested and processed. The driver was cited for driving with a suspended license.

• An Orcas deputy responded to an Eastsound address referencing a restraining order violation. The incident was investigated and a report was taken.

• A Lopez Island deputy responded to a Port Stanley residence for a complaint of possible criminal trespassing. It was determined that the suspected trespasser was not on the property. The suspect was located and denied being on the property.

• A deputy spoke with a Lopez Island resident regarding a disturbance at a business. The business manager stated an employee’s former boyfriend harassed her at work. The deputy spoke with the ex-boyfriend, who denied the incident and agreed to refrain from contacting his ex in the future.

• A deputy was dispatched to a theft in Eastsound. A report was taken.

Feb. 3

• Friday Harbor deputies responded to a call of domestic assault. When deputies arrived the victim and witness told them what had occurred. The suspect admitted to the assault and was taken into custody and booked into jail pending a court hearing.

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic assault call on San Juan Island. The suspect had already left. An investigation is ongoing.

• A Lopez Island deputy was called to investigate an incident wherein three Seattle women suffered dog bites when their dogs began fighting and the women tried to pull the dogs apart. Injuries to the women were minor and treated by EMS. The dogs’ injuries were treated by a vet.

• A deputy took a report of a stolen vehicle tab in Eastsound. Person(s) unknown had removed a stack of tabs from a legally licensed vehicle.

Feb. 5

• A deputy responded to a motor vehicle collision on Orcas. The driver had minor injuries. The collision was caused by icy road conditions. A collision report was completed.

• Lopez Island deputies were sent to investigate a reported domestic violence incident. Upon investigation, there was insufficient evidence to make an arrest.

• A deputy took a report of a dog-at-large in Eastsound. The owners were located and issued a warning.

• A Lopez Island woman reported that two unaccompanied dogs were chasing deer at Iceberg Point. The caller did not recognize the dogs, and it is unknown whether the dogs caught a deer. Information will be forwarded to Bureau of Land Management.

• A Friday Harbor deputy responded to a report of a vehicle prowler in town. The victim left his wallet in his van and when he went to get it, it was missing. There are no suspects and there was no useful physical evidence.

• A Lopez Island deputy was sent to check on the wellbeing of a local woman who had called 911 frightened and disoriented. The woman was found safe and secure. No further action was necessary.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a request for a welfare check. The deputy discovered an assault had taken place and this case is still under investigation.

Feb. 6

• A Lopez Island deputy was called to assist a resident who was unable to get home safely. The resident’s car was stuck ii the snow and ice, blocking the road on a hilly curve. The vehicle was safely removed from the roadway and the resident transported home.

• A deputy was dispatched to a call of trespassing and theft in Friday Harbor. There are no suspects or further information at this time.

• A deputy was dispatched to a non-injury collision in Friday Harbor. A collision report was taken.

• A Lopez Island deputy was sent to investigate a 911 hang up call. The deputy was greeted by confused parents. Little kids playing with the phone were determined to be the culprits. Mom and dad will educate the kids about 911 use.

• A Lopez Island woman requested assistance in recovering property from a family member. The involved parties were involved in a physical altercation the previous day, and the caller wanted to avoid direct contact. The deputy recovered the items and the matter was resolved without further incident.

• A Lopez Island man was detained for shoplifting from a local business. The stolen property was recovered and the man was issued a trespass letter barring him from coming back to the business.

• A deputy was dispatched to the Orcas ferry terminal regarding a vehicle stolen by an unknown male suspect. The next day, the vehicle was discovered wrecked and abandoned on Deer Harbor Road.

• A Lopez Island deputy was called to a reported theft of firewood. The matter was determined to be civil in nature and no further action was taken.

Feb. 8

• A subject turned himself in at the Orcas Substation regarding a warrant for drug possession. The subject was arrested and transported to the jail to await arraignment.

• A vehicle slid into ditch on Center Road on Lopez Island, partially blocking the northbound lane. The undamaged vehicle was pulled out of the ditch by the driver’s parents.

• A vehicle lost traction on a southbound hill of Center Road on Lopez. A deputy helped push the car to a safe spot and helped the driver chain up.

• A deputy was sent to a San Juan Island residence to conduct a welfare check. The deputy was unable to make contact with the subject.
