Van Haalen arraignment, June 16

Former Friday Harbor Elementary School Principal Caspar van Haalen was charged with one count of indecent exposure in San Juan County District Court on June 3. His arraignment is set for 8:30 a.m. on June 16.

According to court documents, van Haalen, 58, of Friday Harbor, “knowing such conduct was likely to cause reasonable affront or alarm, did intentionally make an open and obscene exposure of his person” to two adult women aboard a Washington State Ferry on its way from Anacortes to Friday Harbor on May 23.

San Juan County dispatch received a call from a WSF crew member that day stating that a white male aboard one of their vessels was exposing his genitals and masturbating. Deputies contacted the victims and VanHaalen when the ferry arrived in Friday Harbor.

One of the two adult female victims told deputies van Haalen had been watching her and her sister while touching himself for approximately 15 minutes. Concerned for their safety, the two women approached WSF crew regarding the incident and van Haalen was arrested.
