We lost a great soul and a brilliant mind in the passing of Robert L. (Bob) Charters on Aug. 15, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Pat) Charters; children, Bill, Robin, Jean (Ream), John, and Chris; sister, Jean Van Hoomissen of Portland, Ore.; and 14 grandchildren.

Bob was an engineering graduate of Notre Dame and obtained a master’s degree from Seattle University (EE), a veteran of the U.S. Navy (Korean War), and retired Boeing Aerospace engineer. He built commercial fishing vessels and raised cattle on an Enumclaw ranch. In his volunteer work, Bob developed youth soccer leagues in Bellevue and Enumclaw, and later was instrumental in the Friday Harbor and Sequim Food Banks, participating as a board member.

He was an active member of the 8455 Sequim Council Knights of Columbus, and the VFW Post 6787 in Carlsborg, Wash., serving veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, introducing them to fly fishing through Project Healing Waters.

Bob loved the great outdoors — hiking, fishing, skiing, hunting and sailing, instilling the same love in his children and grandchildren, Bob will be truly missed.

A Mass will be celebrated in Robert’s honor on Sept. 11, 2010, noon, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim, Wash., followed by a graveside ceremony at Dungeness Cemetery (next to the Olympic Game Farm on Lotzgesell Road), and Life Celebration at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, Sequim.

Donations can be made to Project Healing Waters, c/o Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishing Club, P.O. Box 2971, Port Angeles, WA. 98362, www.projecthealingwaters.org, and/or the Sequim Food Bank, 144 W. Alder St., Sequim, WA. 98382, or Friday Harbor Food Bank, 500 Market St., Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
