When a batch of cookies sparks a bidding war and sells for $325, things are going well.

About 300 people attended the benefit for Matt Johnson Saturday at the San Juan County Fairgrounds and more than $22,000 was raised at the live auction alone. The money will help defray the costs of Johnson’s upcoming stem cell transplant.

It wasn’t the only fundraiser over the weekend. Warm weather, throwing and hitting competitions, and a dunk tank drew a large number of children and parents to the Friday Harbor Baseball and Softball Association’s third annual Hit-a-Thon, Friday at Friday Harbor Elementary School. Roughly $17,000 was raised in two previous events, and organizers were hoping to collect as much as $10,000 as part of this year’s event.
