Forgetful ferry riders; troubled trespassers; MIP mishap | San Juan County Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Aug. 8

• Deputies arrived at a residence on San Juan Island to investigate a drug overdose.

• A deputy investigated a burglary on San Juan.

• A Lopez deputy was called to euthanize a deer that had been hit by a car and seriously injured.

• A Lopez deputy ticketed a pickup and trailer parked in the roadway, partially blocking Lopez Road in the village.

• A deputy recovered a few dozen used syringes under a public bench in Friday Harbor. The syringes were disposed of.

• A Lopez deputy investigated a hit-and-run collision that damaged a parked car at the ferry landing.

• A deputy was dispatched to a hit-and-run in Friday Harbor.

Aug. 9

• Deputies responded to a traffic offense call in Friday Harbor. Deputies met with the parties involved, determined that no criminal offense had occurred and a report was made.

• San Juan deputies were advised of a report of harassment. The incident was investigated, and a report was generated.

• An Orcas deputy took a report of a possible missing person. Information was gathered and entered into the data system to assist in the effort to locate the subject.

• An Orcas resident reported items he left on consignment at a local business were no longer there. The business had closed down without notice, and his items were missing. The items were located, and arrangements were made to receive payment. The dispute was settled by contact.

• A Lopez deputy took a report regarding a lost or stolen handgun.

• A deputy was dispatched to a suspicious circumstance in Friday Harbor. The investigation continues.

• A deputy was dispatched to a civil matter in Friday Harbor. All parties involved were advised to take the matter through the civil court process.

• Lopez deputies responded to a residence for a possible assault. The investigation revealed a domestic violence assault had occurred and a subject was arrested and transported to jail to await a hearing with a judge in Friday Harbor.

• A deputy issued an infraction to a driver for speeding in Friday Harbor.

• A deputy issued an infraction to a driver in the Friday Harbor area for having no insurance and a warning for speeding.

Aug. 10

• A Lopez deputy investigated a trespass complaint at the Richardson fuel dock.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a citizen assist in the Eastsound area. A bike that had been reported stolen approximately a month earlier had been located behind a local business. The bike was returned to its owner. The investigation is ongoing.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of a hit-and-run. The suspect was located and hit-and-run charges will be filed with the prosecutor’s office.

• A deputy was dispatched to a trespassing call in the San Juan Island area. The deputy arrived but the people had left. A report was taken.

• San Juan deputies were dispatched to a report of a blocking vehicle on Nichols Street. The driver was located and moved the vehicle.

• A deputy responded to a reported bicycle accident. It was discovered that a single bicyclist had crashed on his own, and there was no evidence to suggest he was struck by a vehicle. The bicyclist was transported to a hospital via airlift.

• A deputy stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a posted stop sign. The driver was issued an infraction.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for not using the turn signal. The driver was issued an infraction.

• A deputy was dispatched to a trespassing in the San Juan Island area. The reporting deputy contacted the property owner. The investigation continues.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a posted stop sign. The driver was issued an infraction for failure to stop at a stop sign and having no driver’s license.

Aug. 11

• An Orcas deputy was on patrol and notified by a citizen that he had received threats from a local resident. The suspect was interviewed and denied the threats. A report was taken.

• San Juan deputies were advised of a domestic incident near Roche Harbor Road. A suspect was identified and later booked into jail.

• Deputies responded to a problem with an inmate in the jail facility. The issue was resolved, and a report made.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to suspicious circumstances call on Blakely Island. A report was taken.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a theft call in the Eastsound area. A report was taken. The investigation is ongoing.

• San Juan deputies were dispatched to a report of an abandoned vehicle on Guard Street. The registered owner was contacted and advised they had a mechanic en route to fix a flat tire.

• An Orcas deputy stopped a vehicle on Mt. Baker Road. The driver was subsequently issued an infraction for speeding 43 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• San Juan deputies responded to a complaint of a suspicious RV near Friday Harbor. On contact, no law violations were noted. The occupants were fixing the vehicle and moved along shortly thereafter.

• San Juan deputies stopped a speeding vehicle on Argyle Road. The driver was issued an infraction for 45 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• The reporting deputy was dispatched to the San Juan Island area in reference to a welfare check. The subject was located and was OK. A report was taken.

• The reporting deputy was contacted at the sheriff’s office in reference to a citizen assist. The person was requesting help with a problem and was put into contact with another agency to assist. A report was taken.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued an infraction for speeding 65 mph in a 35 mph zone, failure to drive in the right lane and having expired vehicle registration under two months.

• San Juan deputies responded to a noise complaint near Egg Lake Road. Deputies noted the noise had been from a wedding reception which had since concluded.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a posted stop sign. The driver was issued an infraction.

• The reporting deputy was dispatched to an animal bite in the San Juan Island area. The reporting deputy contacted the people involved. A report was taken.

Aug. 12

• A Lopez deputy responded to a Lopez residence regarding a trespassing complaint. The homeowner heard the voices of several people on his property near his residence in the middle of the night. The deputy did not locate anyone. A report was taken.

• The reporting deputy was dispatched to a medical emergency. The reporting deputy arrived and investigated the incident. A report was taken.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a suspicious circumstances call at an Eastsound business. A bag of cameras was recovered.

• An Orcas Island deputy was dispatched to a business in the Eastsound area for a report of an unwanted person. The deputy discovered the circumstances were a civil issue.

• A Lopez deputy ticketed an unattended vehicle in the ferry line during the loading of a mainland ferry sailing. The vehicle was sent to the end of the line when the driver returned.

• A Lopez deputy took a vandalism report regarding a vehicle that had tires slashed while parked in a public place.

• A deputy responded to a welfare check in Friday Harbor. The deputy contacted the involved person, transported the individual to the emergency room for a mental health evaluation and a report was taken.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a citizen dispute call at a marina in the Orcas area. The deputy discovered through the investigation that a small boat had been stolen. The investigation is ongoing.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a vehicle theft in the Eastsound area. The investigation is ongoing.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a vehicle parked halfway in the roadway creating a traffic hazard. The vehicle was impounded.

• A Lopez man reported that his minor daughter had received an inappropriate note from an adult male while she was at work. An investigation is underway to identify the suspect.

Aug. 13

• Deputies along with Orcas Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of an individual in distress on the north side of the island. The individual was unable to be located after more than an hour and a half of searching.

• A deputy responded to a report of harassment in Friday Harbor. Upon arrival, the deputy found the call to be a loud noise and the noise had already ceased. Information was gathered, and a report made.

• A Lopez deputy stopped and ticketed a Seattle man for speeding 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on Fisherman Bay Road near Dill Road.

• On July 29, a reported boating accident had occurred in San Juan County. There were no injuries as a result of the accident when the boat struck a submerged rock. The vessel received damage due to the accident. A boating accident report was completed by the operator.

• A deputy was dispatched to a theft of a bicycle in Friday Harbor. A report was taken, but there are no suspects at this time.

• An Orcas deputy responded to the Deer Harbor area for a reported aggravated assault. A report was taken. The investigation is ongoing.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a vehicle parked in the roadway creating a traffic hazard. The vehicle was impounded.

• A deputy responded to an agency assist in Friday Harbor. A report was made.

• A Lopez deputy was called to collect a potentially dangerous weapon abandoned in a public park. The item was logged as found property.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle. The vehicle was reported stolen the day prior and was recovered. The investigation is ongoing.

Aug. 14

• The reporting deputy on San Juan Island was dispatched to the Friday Harbor area on a welfare check. The reporting deputy searched for the involved person. A report was taken.

• A San Juan Island deputy was dispatched to a possible order violation in Friday Harbor. The Investigation continues.

• Lopez deputies responded to a residence for a welfare check. One of the involved subjects had just been released from custody following an arrest for assault. The deputies determined that all involved were okay.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign. The driver was issued a citation for failing to stop at stop sign and having neither insurance nor a driver’s license on person.

• An Orcas Island deputy was conducting an area check at Buck Park in the Eastsound area when he discovered two minors who had been drinking alcohol. The subjects were issued minor in possession criminal citations and released. A local man was also arrested for DUI and released.
