Celebration of life for Henry Gallanger is Feb. 11 | Passages

Henry Gallanger was born Jan. 13, 1932 in Leese, Wash. Henry (more affectionately known as King Henry) passed away Thursday evening Feb. 3rd in Centralia, Wash., with his wife Helaine of 33 years and many family members at his side.

He graduated from Friday Harbor High School, “Class of 1951”, and then joined the Navy of which he served and was medically discharged.

Henry is a 4th generation of San Juan Island Pioneers.

His great-grandfather was Peter Lawson, grandfather Alfred Lawson, mother Marguerite Lawson Gallanger. He was extremely proud of his heritage, his Navy service, his 1951 classmates and their gatherings, and his love for his family.

He was father to three sons, Michael, Patrick and Larry in his first marriage to Josie L. Pauley. Michael preceded his father in death in 1986.

Henry married Helaine Hammond Cary on June 25, 1978 in Chehalis. They owned and worked together at Forest Manor Retirement Home until they sold it in 1989.

Prior employment was with Bremerton Shipyard, he held a CDL license for all his truck driving skills. It needs to be mentioned that he worked with Jim Hartstrom (now deceased) in the ground breaking and earth hauling when Ike Kinswa State Park was built.

Preceding him in death was his father Earl, mother Marguerite, brother Allan and son Michael.

Surviving him are his wife Helaine; sons, Patrick and Larry (Gail) Gallanger; three step-children, Lynn Cary, David Cary and Lisa (Phil) Davis; brothers, Kendall and Noel (Lois); sisters, Gloria, Phyllis and Janice.

There are numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and Charles and Lane Guin of whom he raised as his own.

His life’s enjoyment were hunting, fishing and traveling, especially to his Navy Ship Reunions.

A Celebration of Henry’s Life will be held Fri., Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Museum, 100 S.W. Veterans Way, Chehalis, Wash., (take Exit 77).
