A San Juan Island man died Saturday after his Humvee H3 went off the road on his property at 902 Miller Road and rolled onto its passenger side.

Sheriff’s investigators believe Michael Russell Thor, 52, died of head and neck injuries when he fell climbing out of the vehicle. His body was found outside the vehicle by a friend who went to the property to visit him, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The crash was reported Saturday at 2:33 p.m. Time of the crash had not been determined Monday.

Thor’s home is on 8.5 acres.

The Sheriff’s Department said Monday that vehicle speed was not a factor; it appears the wheels of the Humvee got caught in a small ditch off the driveway, causing the vehicle to roll. Thor apparently exited the vehicle on the driver’s side and fell to the ground while attempting to lower himself down. The fall may have resulted in a blow to the head and an injury to his neck, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Thor’s body was taken to the mainland by Evans Funeral Chapel of Anacortes pending an examination by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.
