San Juan advances to semi-final; five Dragons named to All-Conference Team | Lacrosse
The San Juan Dragons reached new heights in their history Saturday, defeating Roosevelt 7-2 to advance to the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division II semifinals for the first time ever.
In addition, five Dragons have been named to the All-Skagit Conference team: Senior midfielder Michael Ausilio, senior midfielder Forest Dayton, senior attackman Ryan Guard, senior goalie Calen Mehrer, and senior defender Brady Sundberg.
Ausilio is first in groundballs (129) in the six-conference, 29-team Division II. Guard is fourth in goals (38) and eighth in assists (16). Mehrer is fourth in save percentage (.684).
Dayton returned to the San Juan lineup Saturday to lead the Dragons with a two-goal, three-assist performance in the quarterfinal playoff at Friday Harbor High School.
With the win, San Juan (13-2 overall) advances to Wednesday’s semifinal with Lake Washington (15-2 overall) in Kirkland. If they win that game, the Dragons face Lynnwood (15-2 overall) or Wenatchee (15-1 overall) May 29 in Seattle Memorial Stadium in the state championship game.
At home on Saturday, San Juan led from start to finish as stellar defensive play by Sundberg and fellow senior defenders Anci Melic and Niko Roiko made the difference. Ausilio had 12 ground balls and Mehrer had 10 saves at the goal.
Roosevelt’s Michael Bennett and Connor McCarthy scored the only goals for the Roughriders. After finishing second in the Metro Conference and defeating Redmond in the opening round of the playoffs, Roosevelt closed out its season at 11-6-0.
