Davis, Dunn, Mehrer lose first-round matches | State 1A Wrestling Championship

Friday Harbor wrestler Michael Davis (145) lost his first-round match 18-12 to Lee Leavell of Tonasket today at the Mat Classic, the 1A State Wrestling Tournament.

Calen Mehrer (215) lost his first-round match by fall in 4:59 to Brandon Hudson of Tonasket.

Willy Dunn (285) lost his first-round match by fall in 0:50 to John Delap of Okanogan.

Davis next faces Jason Franks of Montesano at 6 p.m. today, for a chance at third place in his weight class. Franks lost his first-round match by fall in 0:48 to Zac Reisenhauer of Columbia Burbank.

Dunn next faces Tyson Balzer of Rainier at 7:36 p.m. for a chance at third place in his weight class. Balzer lost his first-round match by fall in 0:10 to Pete Almaguer of Granger.

Mehrer next faces Blake Wargo of Montesano at 7:20 p.m. today, for a chance at third place in his weight class. Wargo lost his first-round match by fall in 0:22 to Nato Orozco of Connell.

Between Dec. 5 and Feb. 13, Friday Harbor's wrestlers endured double duals and triple duals. The Iron Sharpens Iron Tournament, the Mount Baker Invite, the Sky Valley Classic. The workouts and the late-night ferry rides. Each event a team sport yet a very personal sport. Out there on the mat, it's just you and your opponent. You've got to be faster, smarter, stronger.

And in the end, three Friday Harbor wrestlers — Michael Davis, Willy Dunn and Calen Mehrer — earned passage to the most storied event in prep wrestling in Washington: The 1A State Wrestling Championship. The Mat Classic, in the Tacoma Dome. Thousands of spectators and the best prep wrestlers in the state.

At 11:52 a.m. today, Davis wrestles Lee Leavell of Tonasket in the first round of the 145 weight class competition.

At 1:12 p.m., Mehrer wrestles Brandon Hudson of Tonasket in the first round of the 215 weight class competition.

At 1:28 p.m., Dunn wrestles John Delap of Okanogan in the first round of the 285 weight class competition.
