October 15, 2009 · Updated 5:07 PM
Five American Red Cross volunteers from San Juan Island will assist firefighters battling a fire on the Tommy Thompson trestle in Anacortes.
Emergency personnel from five agencies are on the scene. Island Red Cross volunteers will be part of the feeding crew, feeding firefighters who are expected to battle the fire through the night and into Friday morning.
San Juan Island Red Cross coordinator Arlen Rothauge said early this afternoon that Barbara Low, Karen Marler, and Earlene Rothauge were signed up to leave on the 6 p.m. ferry to Anacortes. He expected to get two more volunteers to join the contingent.
Rothauge said the local chapter was asked by the Anacortes chapter for assistance. "They will be on 24-hour duty, feeding fire crews through the night."
