Need a place to beat the heat?

Then get over to Islands Convalescent Center.

With temperatures hovering around 90 degrees and humidity at levels rarely felt in the islands, Islands Convalescent Center has opened its doors and its air-conditioned living and dining rooms as a "cooling station," and is inviting anyone needing to escape the heat to stop by.

Located at 660 Spring St., next to Inter Island Medical Center, the convalescent is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be available to the general public as a cooling station during that period each day through Aug. 2, and possibly longer if necessary. Cold beverages and snack will be available as well.

Though the elderly may be at greatest risk, ICC's Jerry Banks said that anyone needing a break from the heat is welcome.

"It's dangerous. (The elderly) can dehydrate quickly," Banks said. "We've got plenty of iced tea here and it's cool inside. We just want to be of service to the community. There's not a lot of people who have air-conditioning on the island."
