A San Juan Island woman was arrested for DUI following a bone-rattling detour off the road, up an embankment and into the brush late Saturday, near the intersection of Gladys Way and Turn Point Road.
The 20-year-old, who lost control of her Oldsmobile sedan and ended up wedged between two trees at the crest of the embankment, was taken into custody near the scene of the single-car crash shortly before midnight. She reportedly avoided serious injury even though the sedan climbed up the embankment and came to a stop only after striking a tree.
The collision triggered several phone calls to the sheriff's office. A man reportedly called the sheriff's office at about 11:35 p.m. asking for the location of Gladys Way so that he could take a tire to a friend having car troubles. Fifteen minutes later, authorities received an anonymous tip about something suspicious occurring near the intersection. An officer arrived at the scene moments later and took the woman into custody.
If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail, a $5,000 fine, or both.Contact Journal of the San Juans Editor Scott Rasmussen at email@example.com or 1-360-378-5696.
