The San Juan County Elections Office accepted an application Dec. 1 for a manual recount in the County Council District 4 race.

The request was submitted by Mindy Kayl, who lost to Richard Fralick in that race. In the final count of the 1,921 ballots cast, Fralick received 947 votes, Kayl received 827 votes, and there were 12 write-in votes and 136 undervotes, Elections Supervisor Doris Schaller reported.

The county Canvass Board has scheduled the recount to begin at 9 a.m. on Dec. 4. If more time is needed, the recount will continue to the next day, Dec. 5, also at 9 a.m.

According to the Elections Office, the costs of the recount are paid by the candidate requesting the recount. Kayl has paid a deposit of 25 cents per ballot counted; she has asked that ballots be recounted in two of three precincts, a total of 1,833 ballots.
