San Juan County Treasurer Jan Sears reports that as of the close of business on Nov. 7, the county had collected 95 percent of the property taxes on the rolls for 2008.

“We’re doing pretty well,” she said in a press release from the county communications office. In 2007, the percentage of taxes collected by the end of the year was 97.2 percent.

The deadline date for the second (and final) payment of San Juan County’s 2008 tax bills was Oct. 31. Sears said approximately $2.1 million in 2008 taxes remain outstanding.

Next week, the treasurer’s staff will send out reminder postcards to 1,049 accounts with taxes due. Last year, the office sent out 974 reminders.
