40th District legislators are hosting a Meet the Candidate event for Kevin Ranker, Democratic nominee for state Senate.

The event is Oct. 1, 5-7 p.m., in the Skagit River Brewery, 404 S. Third St., Mount Vernon.

Ranker, a member of the San Juan County Council, faces Republican Steve Van Luven, a former state representative from Bellevue now living on Samish Island, in the Nov. 4 general election. One of them will succeed Harriet Spanel, who is retiring from the Senate.

"The 40th District team needs a new member to carry on the fight," the invitation states.
