Six people were killed, including a Skagit County Sheriff’s deputy, and two were wounded Tuesday afternoon in a series of shootings in the Skagit County town of Alger.

A suspect surrendered in Mount Vernon after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase, newspapers and TV stations reported.

The Skagit Valley Herald quoted the suspect's mother as saying she had long tried to get her son help for what she described as “severe mental illness.”

“The officer I called to help ... is the one who is dead,” the mother told the Herald in a phone interview.
