Orcas Island woman gets 30 days for theft

An Orcas Island woman facing a charge of felony theft will serve 30 days in jail after pleading guilty last week to lesser charges.

On Aug. 8, Marie Westgate, 18, pleaded guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to three counts of third-degree theft, a gross misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 365 days in jail with 335 days suspended for two years. She was also ordered to pay $850 in fines and fees.

She will be allowed to serve 15 days on work crew and 15 days were converted to 120 hours of community service.

Westgate cashed three disability checks, totalling $2,077, belonging to a boyfriend who was in jail. Westgate reportedly used the money in part to pay rent for their apartment.
