Update: Vehicle plunges into backyard pond; man trapped inside dies

An 88-year-old San Juan Island man died Monday afternoon after the vehicle that he and two others were traveling in plunged into a pond in the backyard of a home on the westside of San Juan Island.

Emergency responders tried without success to resuscitate the man, described in a San Juan Island EMS press release as an "elderly patient," after they were able to locate the vehicle in about 10 feet of murky water.

Several responders dove below the surface, freed the man from vehicle and brought him to the shore, where efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two other occupants, the man's wife and daughter, reportedly escaped from the vehicle on their own.

“The actions of the first responders, disregarding their personal safety resulted in a timely rescue, and was above and beyond the call of duty,”  Sheriff Rob Nou said.

First responders reportedly arrived at the home Mountain Shadows Lane home, in the Kanaka Bay Road neighborhood, near False Bay, seven minutes after a 911 call came from the westside home, at 2:13 p.m.

The vehicle was entirely submerged and about 40 feet from the bank of the pond, with the man trapped inside at the time, according to EMS.

A sheriff's deputy and emergency medical technician were later treated for possible injuries from water inhalation and later released.
