The Yacht Haven area of San Juan Island officials becomes a Firewise Community tonight at 5 in the District 3 Headquarters Fire Station, 1011 Mullis St.

This meeting will explain how wildfires work and some strategies for preventing damage from them.

The Firewise program helps homeowners protect their homes from wild fires. When a community joins together, they help protect each other. Simple things like cleaning gutters, along with more complex efforts such as maintaining fire engine access to the area, becomes much easier.

"Please come if interested in being involved in the Yacht Haven Firewise Community," Yacht Haven Neighborhood Association acting president Keri Talbott said. "This includes all roads that connect to Yacht Haven. After the initial meeting and the application process, a work day will be held once a year. Please come and get involved! Any one from any area of San Juan Island that would like to become a Firewise Community is welcome to attend this general meeting."
