From Aug. 4 through the end of September, utility work will take place on Fisherman Bay Road on Lopez Island, from Military Road at the north end to Hummel Lake Road at the south end.

During this phase of construction, OPALCO and CenturyTel will be relocating and installing utility lines underground. Some of the work will require trenching across the road, so motorists should expect delays, occasionally as long as 30 minutes.

Design for the next step, the improvement of the roadway itself, has now been completed and County officials expect to complete right-of-way certification and environmental permitting in time to get major construction underway by mid-October. Construction activity will be suspended during the winter and engineers are targeting completion for mid-summer 2009.

Project Manager Dan Vekved said that no graveled roadway surface will be left unpaved during the winter hiatus.
