The state Department of Natural Resources has announced a ban on all silvicultural burning in Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties.

The ban is now in effect until further notice.

Silvicultural burning is usually associated with timber operations or other forest practices on unimproved or forested land.

Even though the burn ban does not apply to federally managed land in those counties, federal agencies may have similar restrictions in effect.

The burn ban coincides with one already in effect for improved properties in those counties.

Recreational campfires are allowed if built in improved fire pits in designated campgrounds, such as those typically found in local, county and state parks and in commercial campgrounds.

Call the San Juan County Fire Marshal, 378-3473.
