San Juan EMS honors 'excellence' at annual awards banquet
Maddy Anderson was recognized as EMT of the Year and Doug Harmon earned the Rookie of the Year award at San Juan Island EMS' annual awards banquet, Jan. 11, at San Juan Island Yacht Club. The two were selected for the awards by a vote of their peers.
Officer of the Year honors went to Deanna Banry for coordinating the emergency medical agency's scheduled transport and Cady Davies received the Chief's Award for "tireless assistance" to the many areas of the agency's efforts.
In addition, Dr. Michael Sullivan presented the San Juan County Medical Program Director Award to Robin DeLazerda, chief dispatcher of San Juan County Sheriff's Department, in recognition of her leadership, dedication and service while emergency communications were disrupted when CenturyLink's fiber-optic system failed in November.
In 2013, San Juan EMS and Medevac/Island Air Ambulance responded to 1,496 emergency medical calls.
San Juan EMS and Island Air Ambulance were previously awarded the 2013 Fixed Wing Award of Excellence by the Association of Air Medical Services, and EMS achieved "CAMTS Critical Care" accreditation for ground and for fixed-wing services by a national accrediting organization for emergency transport.
Also at the annual awards banquet, Northwest Medstar, the aeromedical dispatch center for Island Air Ambulance, was presented the Franklin-Heath Award in recognition of its service and dedication to emergency medical transport in the San Juan County.
